Netflix is once again choosing Lisbon as the filming location for a new production. But, the City Council fears possible problems. We still don’t know if it will be a series or a movie, nor when it will premiere, but the Portuguese production company Ready to Shoot is responsible for the project.
The recordings are scheduled for eight consecutive nights, from July 11 to 20, between 6 pm and 8 am. The Junta de Freguesia of Santa Maria Maior – which includes the neighborhoods of Alfama, Baixa, Chiado, Castelo, and Mouraria – says that the recordings harm the rest, the right of circulation and access of the residents.
The president of the Junta, Miguel Coelho, assumes that these recordings are important for the city, but reinforce the welfare of the inhabitants of the parish.
Another of the president’s concerns is that the use of spotlights and the action scenes (with effects and firearms, and chases down the neighborhood stairs) will affect the lives of residents, especially the elderly and children.
The Mayor of Lisbon, Carlos Moedas, has already said that he is available to find solutions for the lives of the residents. However, he has shown his enthusiasm for the production in Lisbon. It should be emphasized that legally the Council cannot prevent the recordings.
Not the first time for Netflix in Portugal
The famous series “Casa de Papel” had scenes recorded in Lisbon, at Elevador da Bica, Bairro Alto, and also in the South Bank.

The premiere of a Portuguese production on the streaming platform was the series “Glória”, which took place in Lisbon and also in the Ribatejo region. And the series “Até Que a Vida Nos Separe” was the first Portuguese series bought by Netflix.
