It is increasingly common for young people to take a gap year and put on hold the entry into a new phase of their life. We explain it all.
Doing a gap year has been an option increasingly chosen by young students who, for multiple different reasons, decide, for example, not to leave high school directly to higher education. Don’t know what we are talking about? We explain. A gap year is a period of time between two stages in a young person’s life. It is a break between what is known as the common pathway: high school, followed by higher education, and finally entry into the labor market.
This break is for you to get to know yourself, to understand which path you want to follow (without the pressure of having to choose the next step immediately), to get out of your comfort zone and even to acquire some soft skills.
When we talk about gap year, the first thing we think of is traveling. However this is just one of the options you have to fill this break: you can, for example, travel, volunteer or work. What really matters is that you go through new experiences that add something to you and, above all, that you get out of your daily routine and learn more about yourself.
You should take your gap year before you make a life-changing decision. This means that there is no specific time to take this break, the idea is to take it when you feel it will be beneficial for you.
Depending on what you decide to do during your gap year, the benefits you get from it will also be different. However, gap years are known to be a phase of self-knowledge, where you use your time to focus on yourself, your goals and your skills.
The more you learn during your gap year, the more it will benefit you and your future. If, for example, you decide to travel, it is a great opportunity to acquire new soft skills, get to know new cultures and even learn a new language.
Although gap year refers to a year of experience, the truth is that there is no set duration for this phase of your life. So, you can take six months to make this break or even use more than a year. The important thing is that, regardless of the duration of the experience, you get the most out of it.
