Braga and Guimarães will host the Futsal University World Cup from July 18th to 24th. The University of Minho, the Academic Association of the University of Minho (AAUM), and the Social Action Services of the University of Minho (SASUM) are the main organizers of the Championship. The event takes place in partnership with the Academic Federation of University Sport (FADU).
In the 1998 and 2012 editions, the Futsal World Championship was in Minho city. In 2019, the AAUM was responsible for organizing the European Futsal Championship.
This year the World Cup was going to be held in Shanghai, but with the pandemic evolution, the International University Sports Federation (FISU) chose to propose the return to Portugal. The national selector, Jorge Braz, considers that this attribution is “the recognition of Portugal’s organizational capacity in everything”. He also mentioned that the national technical teams will prepare the university selections.
The president of AAUMinho, Duarte Lopes, showed to be very happy with the realization of the event at the University of Minho. However, he already mentioned the dimension of the challenge, because usually organizations have two years to prepare for the event, and this time, it will be only five months.
Since 1990, Portugal has already organized 13 world university championships. This year, besides futsal, the city of Aveiro will host the cross-country World Cup on March 12th.
