In the international Worlds Travel Awards, considered the Oscars of tourism, Portugal won 37 awards. As for the best European destination in the category of Inland Beaches, this is the beach in the Alentejo.
The river beach of Tapada Grande is in Mértola and was elected for the first time as the best European destination in the category Inland Beaches. That we have the best beaches on our shores, that we already knew. But that we have the best fluvial beaches, we were still discovering.
The truth is that each fluvial beach in Portugal, from north to south, is better than the previous one. This time, the prize for best destination was in the Alentejo – and well inland.
This beach is on the Mina de São Domingos lagoon near the old copper mine, which was once considered the most important in Europe. It is a true paradise where the calm waters invite you to take long swims or rides in the canoes and pedalos available for rent.
Besides this, the river beach at Tapada Grande has been awarded the blue flag and has a lifeguard until the end of the bathing season on September 15. When you get hungry, go to the bar-restaurant with esplanade or make your own barbecue at the appropriate place.
And since we know that in the Alentejo the sun and the heat are never-ending, we bring you good news. On an internationally distinguished beach you can’t miss free parasols for when you forget your sun hat at home.
