More and more international students are choosing to study in Portugal. Whether it is for Erasmus or to do a degree, Portugal seems to be the destination of choice for those who want to study abroad.

More and more international students have been choosing Portugal and portuguese universities. However, the covid-19 pandemic has affected the mobility as international university students since they were constrained in their travel. Therefore, the number of international students in Portugal decreased slightly.

According to a study conducted by Universities Portugal, in the 2020/2021 academic year, almost 59 thousand international students were enrolled in Portugal. This number, when compared with the data from the 2019/2020 academic year shows that around 6 thousand fewer students came to Portugal.

The study also shows that despite this decrease, the numbers are expected to rise again soon.

The Portuguese universities that received the most international students were Universidade de Évora, Universidade Nova de Lisboa and Universidade do Algarve in the 2020/2021 academic year. Most of the international students enrolled in these universities come from Brazil and Cape Verde.

The majority of international students who choose to study in Portugal come to study for a Bachelor’s degree, but it is also common for them to attend Master’s degrees and they choose, most of the time, public institutions.

The fields that receive the most international students are business, law, engineering, social sciences, journalism, health and arts.
